These were merely tools of collective anxiety, designed to impose predictability on the chaos of instinct. But as Carl Jung recognized, the unconscious is archetypally feminine: receptive, flowing, fertile, dark. This is not limited to women; the feminine is embedded within all minds. Yet its external manifestation in women has been the particular target of social control mechanisms.

But what underlies all these is the singular Purusha —the divine masculine, the cosmic witness, the reflective consciousness within which all rasas arise and dissolve.
Importantly, this Purusha is not separate from the feminine. He is mirrored within her, as she is within him. Every man is born of woman; every woman contains the masculine spark. This ontological unity dissolves the dualism of control vs. surrender. Regulation, then, becomes a dialogue, not a domination.
Beyond Patriarchy and Capitalism
Today, women face a different regime: not ancient codes, but modern commodification. The sexualized body is now a brand asset; emotion is manipulated by algorithms; desire is mined for profit. But this is no less distorting than the ritualistic suppression of the past.
The antidote lies not in swinging between these extremes, but in reclaiming the sacred middle path of aesthetic devotion. Women—and by extension all humans—must be offered cultural scaffolding through which their emotional and erotic energies are refined, not judged or exploited.
This is why India’s aesthetic-spiritual tradition matters so profoundly today. It does not preach denial, nor indulgence, but transformation. It offers a way of seeing art not merely as entertainment, but as yoga, as inner regulation, as emotional dharma.

In this light, women do not need surveillance or salvation. They need sadhana. They need the sacred fire of music, the disciplined ecstasy of dance, the fierce vulnerability of poetry. Through these cultural forms, the mind is not silenced, but stilled; desire is not crushed, but consecrated.
The future of gender, desire, and cultural harmony may depend not on new laws, but on a revival of aesthetic spirituality that honors the feminine as sacred power and the masculine as receptive witness.
